This week I sadly finished the series Mad Men, and all I can think about is why wasn´t I born surrounded by THAT style. It is mixture of things that seem too much but brought together they look perfect. Of course, everything comes back, but not all together, so take your suitcase, follow me while you pack, and let’s take a trip to the past to dress up to kill in the 60s.

Dresses and skirts. Trousers are still for men. All a lady need is a fabulous multicoloured skirt. All patterns are admitted, from circles, to flowers, to orange and blue together. Colours didn´t have the imposition they have in the twenty-first century, and no matter the colour, you didn´t look as if you took your grandmother´s tablecloth.
The length of the skirt, something that always questioned. For the planning of the journey, buy more fabric to add to your own skirts, as the should reach the knee. It is not necessary to cover it, 60s girl know how to be sexy, but it must at least touch it.
If you want to outshine your neighbours, pick up a two-piece option, both with the same pattern! All eyes will be on you. Of course, following the same rule, the more colours you add, the better. The two-piece can also turn into a three-piece if you add a coat with the same design. I know it seems too much but believe me, it looks good. Or at least it did at
the time.

And following the two-pieces cloth with the same pattern, are the skirt suits. A shirt inside of a skirt with a matching jacket with buttons. Jackets were abandoned in the mid-70s and taken back in the 00s. But even if you have a jacket, they still hardly look as the way they did in our fictional trip, as this trend was not only to wear a jacket, but to combine it with a matching skirt.
Important message: leave your Adidas Superstar in your closet and only take the trip pointed thin heels, in case you have a pair. Boots were at first hated in the 60s, felt like something an old lady would wear. Designers had to reinvent themselves and took modern materials to make new, fashionable boots. This is how polyvinyl chloride boots were invented. So, Hunter didn´t exist in the 60s, but if you take yours to the trip they will look perfect. The only thing they need, surely, color! They should match your clothes and headband.
Hairstyles are never easy, in any decade. The 60s required a big effort and knowledge in hair products. What was it there to do? Many half high ponytails and of course, headbands! And they must match the clothing. The concept is something like “the bigger the better”, and “too much is never enough”.
We can´t forget the most famous bouffant style. Again, big and up. So, if you know nothing about hair, start making your research or you will not able to make it to the journey.
For the next accessory, you can take your headband off, and make room in the suitcase. Take the same fabric you have been using and make a delicate piece for your head. They don´t have to be big and shiny. They just need to match with your outfit. A veil can also be added, as long as it is not black, as it will give a funeral vibe. And, surely, lots of patterns and new fabrics, 60s are a decade to explore and introduce new things never seen before.
Don´t waste money in having your nails done, no one will see your hands if you remember to pack your gloves. And don´t take the Winter gloves you bought to go skiing with friends, this gloves don´t have to warm your hands, they have to give them, and you, class. Think of leather, lace and nylon.
There is no need to freak out, you can easily get a pair of gloves in Amazon today. And if you want an authentic pair, as soon as we arrive to our destination, gloves will be sold everywhere. And believe me, they are a fundamental touch to your look. They will make you look elegant and chic.
I know that I am overwhelming you a lot, but relax, we are almost done with the packing. There is only an extra detail that can´t be missed. We use jewel on daily bases. However, as I think is now clear, the 60s weren´t easy for any girl´s closet. Again, our favourite rule, more is better! It was a good moment for mass production and with big fabrication, there must be huge consuming. So yes, these girls were taken to malls by advertisement (okay, I don´t want to get over Mad Men).
What did designers do with jewerly? They experimented with new materials and techniques, like they did with hats and boots. Fashionably pieces were made with plastic, metal and pearls. Plastic and metal were very revolutionary inventions, if you think of hippism, they took this trend and then owned it. Pearls, something the 60s are famous for and is now sell worldwide, even if it is not used as before. Pearl necklaces and big pearl earrings were, of course, not too much, but something great. So, for this journey, go to your grandmother’s house and take all the pearls you know she has hidden somewhere.
Now I think we are ready. Take that heavy suitcase, go to the nearest time machine and let´s go! But don´t forget to take wi fi with you and your computer or you will miss next week’s post!!
